Take Ginger for Migraines

Sometimes it’s the simplest of herbs that we have sitting in our cupboards that can have the biggest impact.


Ginger is a fine example of this.

It can be debilitating and wipe people out for days. Ginger can be an effective way to fight migraines naturally — even more powerful than some of the top-selling drugs for the treatment of migraines!


If you’ve ever suffered from a migraine, you will know that a migraine is so much more than just a headache. Migraines make normal activities impossible for an estimated one billion people worldwide. And they are responsible for billions in healthcare costs.


But could a natural remedy work as well as drugs, with fewer side effects?


First, let’s look at powdered ginger and what it can do for our health…

It can support your immune system because of that spicy, pungent scent-flavour due to gingerol, which is a compound that has antioxidant properties helping to rid your body of free radicals.


This active compound in ginger can also help improve insulin and metabolism. Both dried and fresh ginger can be used for all your cooking and smoothie delights. Also note, that while some chemical compounds in ginger may decrease over time, the drying process enhances other beneficial ones.


From all of the research done on ginger and its pain-relieving properties, results show that it can massively help with menstrual pains and cramps. Sipping ginger tea can also soothe nausea during that time of the month. Plus, like other produce, nuts, seeds, beans, and whole grains, ginger contains antioxidant-like compounds that help reduce cell damage. The root can also prevent inflammation from starting by reducing cell-signalling activity. With that in mind, adding ginger to already good-for-you, nutrition bursting meals- is the key to gaining the powerful benefits this spice has to offer. Ginger also has multiple digestive benefits, specifically acting on parts of the GI tract responsible for feelings of nausea, stomach upset and vomiting. It may also help move food from the stomach to the small intestine for improved digestion and absorption.

The same anti-inflammatory compounds in ginger can also reduce the risk of chronic disease. Ginger can lower blood pressure and decrease blood lipids (fats) levels, both of which help protect against heart disease, and a regular ginger intake will lower cholesterol and balance blood sugar levels. But just like diabetes, eating ginger can't offset an otherwise poor diet high in saturated fat and added sugar. You'll still have to consume more veggies, 100% whole grains, lean proteins, fish, legumes, and beans in order to reduce your risk.

What’s also amazing is that the cell-protecting properties of ginger can lower the long-term risk of certain cancers. That's because it reduces cellular activity that causes DNA changes, cell death, and proliferation of cancer cells. It could also help sensitize tumors to treatments like chemo and radiation. While ginger's not a cure-all for any chronic disease, using it regularly with loads of other spices and plant-based foods can help benefit health overall.

So how do we use ginger for a migraine?


At the first sign of a migraine coming on, you can try this:

  • Mix one-eighth of a teaspoon of powdered ginger in water

  • Drink it and see if your migraine lessens or disappears within a half hour

Sticking to an eighth of a teaspoon can be up to 3,000 times cheaper than any drug and you’ll be less likely to suffer the potential side effects of prescription drugs.
